Teeth Whitening

Tooth discoloration is one of the most common problems that have many reasons. Teeth whitening is an ideal option for people who have got healthy natural teeth and gums. There are certain specific ways to whiten teeth. There are in-office whitening and at-home professional whitening.

What are the reasons for tooth discoloration?

There are specific reasons for tooth discoloration:

  • Inadequate brushing and flossing daily
  • Irregular dental visits
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Having food and drinks that leave stains like black tea, coffee, tomato sauce, berries, cola drinks, and citrus foods and drinks.

What happens in an in-office whitening?

In-office whitening can be done in a single visit. At first, professional cleaning is carried out for the teeth. Then, a protective barrier is placed to isolate the teeth from the soft tissues of the mouth. A hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is applied evenly to the exposed surfaces of the teeth that need whitening.

A patented blue-spectrum light or a laser is used to activate the gel, which stays on teeth for about 15 minutes. The gel is removed and applied again after five to ten minutes. The desired result can be attained soon after three or four applications. However, satisfactory whitening results can be seen after the first appointment.

What are the other whitening systems?

The dentist will recommend the treatment after doing a detailed examination. These whitening systems, are included in at-home professional whitening, such as:

Whitening toothpaste:The toothpaste recommended by the dentist can make your teeth three to eight shades lighter. It is because toothpaste contains carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide that can lighten teeth.

Over-the-counter whitening strips and gels:The peroxide-based whitening gels are applied with a small brush directly to the surface of the teeth. On the other hand, whitening strips are virtually invisible strips that are coated with a peroxide-based whitening gel.

Whitening Rinses: Whitening rinses can help have freshening breath. It can also remove dental plaque and gum disease.

Tray-based whiteners: Tray-based teeth whitening systems, involve filling a custom-made guard-like tray with a peroxide-bleaching agent. It is used a couple of hours a day for about four weeks.
